    A bipartisan balancing act

Identify yourself as a "Democrat" or "Republican," and hardly anybody will accuse you of being a reformer. Party labels of any kind are increasingly -- and correctly -- seen as obstacles to the kind of sweeping change...

  • Rightin' the 'rithmetic

If all goes according to plan, Wednesday will be the D-Day of New York education. That is when officials will present an honest assessment of how state students are doing in reading and math. Just as making an...

  • The real issue in mosque debate

In his passionate defenses of the planned mosque near Ground Zero, Mayor Bloomberg depicts the issue as a simple case of freedom of religion. "People have a right to pray, and I think, you know, we have a quarter...

  • Let the devil's advocate rot

Justice is blind, but not stupid. At least not in the case of the odious Lynne Stewart. It took years, but this is a story of triumph for innocent people everywhere in the war against terrorists. The criminal...

  • A heart just as warm as his temper

Over the years, I occasionally was invited to watch a Yankee game from George Steinbrenner's box at the Stadium. Until his health declined, The Boss was always on hand as a cheerful and gracious host to a group that at...

  • Why we must be free to fail

At first glance, the idea that we are losing the freedom to fail sounds like a reason to celebrate. Losing the chance to fail should also mean we're guaranteed to win, right? Wrong. Misguided social perfectionists...

  • The conflict that O must resolve now

Last December, when he announced his decision on Afghanistan, President Obama solved one problem and created another. It was quite a feat, all the more so because he did it in a single paragraph. "As commander-in...

  • Disturbing disdain for the rule of law

With the shock still fresh over the sacking of Gen. Stanley Mc Chrystal, it fell to Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, to put the case in perspective: "We are and must remain a neutral instrument of...

Put him in line of 'fire'

Truth is no defense to in subordination. For the good of the troops, the mission and the entire military command structure, Gen. Stanley McChrystal must be sacked. It matters not a whit whether McChrystal is...

  • Dave: To bankruptcy - & beyond!

"Toy Story," the movie, is all the rage. Albany Story, the farce, causes rage. There are no heroes or happy endings in the capital, even as state leaders pinky-swear they're going straight this time. No more foolin'...

  • Crude grab for power never ends

Once again, President Obama channels Oscar Wilde, who famously said the only thing he couldn't resist was temptation. So it is with Obama's attempt to turn the Gulf oil debacle into a reason why America should...

  • School's in for summer

Hold the wailing. The city's announcement that 21,000 students are headed for summer school should not be confused with bad news. It is instead a welcome sign that standards are being raised. The scandal isn't that...

  • Helen: the good news

Call me a cockeyed optimist, but the Helen Thomas storm may have a silver lining. To find it, the White House and the rest of the anti-Israel crowd must see Islamic radicals for what they are. Consider what Thomas...

  • Slick talk aside, O's just not up to the job

His message is wrong. He's not showing enough anger. He's lost control of the narrative. He's a vic tim of bad luck and big oil. It's excuse time in the fudge factory. President Obama is getting lots of cover and...

  • Anti-Israel sharks sniff O's weakness

In the aftermath of the Gaza flotilla fiasco, the air is thick with nonsense. Chief among the instant myths is that Israel has created a dilemma for President Obama. Actually, it's the other way around. The...

Along with its usual claims that cuts will destroy schools, the Web site of the United Federation of Teachers marks the union's 50th anniversary by paying strange homage to a firebrand founder, Albert Shanker. It...

  • Taxpayers! We can fight spitty haul

And so finally, the spit hits the fan. Now it's the assault against taxpayers that must get thrown under the bus. It will be crowded under there, if common sense is still common. We will find out as the November...

  • Bam's daze of the weak

President Obama is the backward man. Teddy Roosevelt's advice to "speak softly and carry a big stick" was meant as a guide to successful foreign relations. Obama has completely muddled the message. He speaks softly...

  • Cuomo's need: An army of the angry

He's become the Godot of the Albany drama. Everybody is waiting for Andrew Cuomo. Will he be worth the wait? Will Cuomo bring the smarts and a bold reform agenda to a campaign to reverse New York state's relentless...

'Where's the mayor?" was the refrain when Mayor Bloomberg was a no-show after the Staten Island Ferry crash. It was the right question at the wrong time. Bloomberg was surely out of town last Saturday when the...

  • Greedy blood$uckers of the Vampire State

The showdown in Albany over furloughs creates a dilemma: deciding which group is more destructive, the greedy unions or the craven legislators who support them. Let's call it a tie, because neither cares about...

  • Teach unions a lesson in democracy

The worst that can be said about top state Senate Democrats who joined Republicans to more than double the cap on charter schools is that they did it to save themselves from angry voters. That's not so bad. In fact...

Here's a flip-flop worth applauding. President Obama looks to be dropping his failed hard-line policy toward Israel and is moving closer to the position he inherited from President Bush. Some Jewish leaders believe...
